Pest Control Deal

Georgian seafront, a lot of second homes, and buildings that stand empty for months at a time.

Pest Control in Deal

Deal has an unusual amount of Georgian and early Victorian property right on the front, a good deal of it now second homes and holiday lets, and that changes the pattern of what we find here.

A house that nobody is in for weeks at a time is a quiet, undisturbed building, and quiet and undisturbed is exactly what most pests are looking for.

Empty for months

What Happens in a House Nobody Is In

Occupation is a form of pest control that nobody thinks of as one. Feet, noise, lights, opening and closing doors, hoovering and moving furniture all make a building inhospitable. Take all of that away for three months and the situation changes.

What we find in periodically empty property, in rough order:

  • Moths and carpet beetle, in wool carpet and stored textiles, because nothing has been disturbed
  • Rodents settled in properly rather than passing through, often with damage already done
  • Dry traps. Waste traps that evaporate in an empty house, which opens a direct route from the drain into the room. Running every tap and flushing every WC for a minute when you arrive is a free fix and it works.
  • Insects that got in and died, which is usually harmless and occasionally the first sign of something that is not

For a holiday let there is a reputational edge to this as well: a guest finds it before you do, and a review outlives the problem. A check between lettings, and a look at the bedrooms in particular, is worth the twenty minutes.

Deal — Common Questions

The house is empty most of the year. What should we do?

Run every tap and flush every WC when you arrive, so the traps are not dry, and check carpet edges and wardrobes for moth damage. Those two cover most of it.

We let the property out. Can you attend between bookings?

Yes, and that is the easiest time to do it properly. Tell us the gap and we will work to it.

Do you cover Walmer, Kingsdown and Sandwich?

Yes, and the surrounding villages.
