Pest Control Whitstable

Weatherboard cottages, a seafood trade, and a town that doubles in size on a sunny weekend.

Pest Control in Whitstable

Whitstable is a small town with a very large summer. It has an unusual building stock - weatherboarded fishermen’s cottages, alleyways, converted net lofts and a lot of timber - and a food trade built almost entirely around seafood.

Both of those shape the work here in ways that do not apply three miles inland.

Weatherboard and seafood

Timber Cladding, and Waste With a Smell

Weatherboarding. A boarded elevation is a ventilated cavity by design - there is a gap behind the boards, and at the top and bottom of it. That is good for the timber and it is an open route for mice, birds and wasps. Proofing it means closing the ends without stopping the ventilation, which is fiddly and is the difference between a repair that lasts and one that rots the boards.

The alleys and yards. Whitstable’s back alleys are narrow, shared, and often the only place to keep a bin. Shared waste with no clear owner is the commonest single cause of rat pressure in the town centre.

Seafood waste. A trade that produces shell and fish waste has an attraction problem that a sandwich shop does not, and in warm weather it works on a timescale of hours. For those premises the useful measures are refrigerated or sealed storage between collections and a realistic collection frequency in summer - both of which are cheaper than repeat treatments.
