Pest Control Rochester
A high street of genuinely old buildings, and a set of constraints that come with them.
Pest Control in Rochester
Rochester has more properly old building than anywhere else in Medway - medieval, Georgian and early Victorian, a good deal of it listed or in a conservation area, and a high street of small commercial premises in buildings that were never designed to be them.
That changes what can be done as much as what needs doing.
Old and listed buildings
What You Are Allowed to Do to the Fabric
Older buildings give pests more ways in and give us fewer ways to close them. Timber frames move, lath and plaster has voids behind it, lime mortar erodes at the joints, and a roof of hand-made tiles is never tight the way a modern one is.
The constraint is that on a listed building or in a conservation area you cannot simply foam and mesh whatever you like. Work affecting the character of a listed building can need consent, and what looks like a small proofing job - a new vent, a replaced soffit, a mesh across an eaves gap - can be exactly the kind of thing that does.
What we do instead is proof from the inside where possible, use reversible fixings, and match materials rather than filling with expanding foam. Where a job genuinely needs consent we will say so rather than do it and leave you with the problem.
Commercial premises in the old high street have their own version: a food business in a Georgian building shares voids with the units either side, so what arrives in your kitchen may have come in three doors down.

My house is listed. Can you still proof it?
Usually yes, but carefully - reversible fixings, matched materials and internal work where we can. Anything that would need consent we will tell you about rather than just doing it.
We share a wall with the shop next door. Does that matter?
On the high street it matters a great deal. Voids run between units in buildings of that age, and a written finding is what gets the neighbouring business or the landlord to act.
Do you cover Strood and Borstal?
Yes, and Cuxton, Halling and the rest of Medway.
