Hythe sits between the Royal Military Canal and the sea, with the old town climbing the hill behind and Romney Marsh opening out to the west.
The canal is the feature worth writing about, because a still waterway running the length of a town does something specific.
The canal
A Waterway Along the Back of Everything
The Royal Military Canal runs behind the town with gardens, footpaths and back fences along much of it. Still water, dense bankside cover, no disturbance at night and a continuous line through the built-up area: that is a permanent corridor, and properties backing on to it are on it rather than near it.
What that changes is the emphasis. Treating a garden connected to a waterway reduces what is there for a few weeks and the pressure returns. Closing the building is what lasts — the soil pipe entry, the airbricks, the threshold of an outbuilding, anything stored against the back wall.
Two other Hythe factors. The shingle and the seafront: beach huts, kiosks and shoreline businesses have the usual waste and gull pressure, and gulls are protected, so it is proofing and bin discipline rather than removal. And older property on the hill: the streets climbing away from the canal have the same stepped-terrace drainage pattern as Dover, where a defect at the top of a row is felt at the bottom of it.
