Pest Control Sandwich

One of the best-preserved medieval towns in England, which is wonderful to look at and complicated to seal.

Pest Control in Sandwich

Sandwich has an extraordinary concentration of genuinely old building - timber framed, jettied, lime rendered, with roofs that have been patched for four centuries - and a large part of the town is listed or in a conservation area.

It is a beautiful place and it is the hardest kind of building to proof, for reasons that have nothing to do with anybody’s maintenance.

Medieval buildings

Movement, Voids and Consent

Three things make old timber-framed property difficult.

It moves. A timber frame takes up moisture and lets it go with the seasons, so a gap that was sealed in August opens in February. Rigid fillings crack out; flexible ones and mechanical mesh last.

It is full of voids. Between the frame and the render, behind lath and plaster, above a later ceiling, in the space where a floor was inserted. Those are routes, and they are not visible from either side.

You cannot do as you like to it. On a listed building, work affecting its character can need consent, and proofing work sometimes does. We proof internally where we can, use reversible fixings, and say plainly when something needs permission rather than doing it quietly.

Alongside that, Sandwich has marshland and the river on its doorstep, which is a genuine rat reservoir, and a lot of the town backs directly on to it.

Sandwich — Common Questions

Our house is timber framed. Will sealing damage it?

Not if it is done properly - flexible materials and mechanical mesh rather than rigid filler, and nothing that traps moisture in the frame.

Do we need listed building consent for proofing?

Sometimes. We will tell you when we think something needs it rather than doing it and leaving you with the problem.

Do you cover the villages and the marshes?

Yes, including Worth, Ash and the Stour valley.
