How To Tell It Is Bed Bugs
Small dark spots along a mattress seam or the piping of a headboard are the most reliable early sign - that is faecal staining rather than blood, and it does not wipe off the way a stain would. Bites in a line or cluster, usually on skin that was exposed overnight, are common but not universal - some people do not react to bites at all, which is why the mattress and the headboard are checked whether or not anyone has bites.
A live bed bug is flat, roughly the size of an apple pip, and reddish-brown; after feeding it is rounder and darker. They hide in seams, joints and cracks close to where someone sleeps rather than out in the open, which is why a proper inspection means taking the bed apart, not just looking at the surface of the mattress.
