Pest Control Gillingham

Street after street of inter-war semis, and a cavity wall behind nearly every one of them.

Pest Control in Gillingham

Gillingham grew hard between the wars, and the bay-fronted semi with a hipped roof is the signature building here. It is a comfortable house and it has one feature that shapes most of the pest work in the town: a cavity wall with a route from the ground to the roof inside it.

Add the bay roof, the soffit, and an airbrick at the bottom, and you have a vertical motorway that never gets looked at.

Inter-war semis

The Route Up the Cavity

Here is the sequence, and once you have seen it you see it everywhere in this town.

A rat or a mouse gets under the floor - through a defective drain, a damaged airbrick, or a gap where a pipe passes through. From the sub-floor void it reaches the cavity. From the cavity it climbs, because a cavity is a warm dry vertical shaft with joist ends and wall ties to grip. It comes out at the top, usually where the bay roof meets the main wall or where the soffit is open at the verge.

The result is scratching in a bedroom ceiling caused by a defect at ground level, which is why treating only where the noise is produces a treatment that keeps failing.

The three places worth checking on this stock are the airbricks at the base of the wall, the soffit and fascia junction at the bay, and the gap where the soil pipe enters. On a Gillingham semi those three account for most of what we find, and all three are proofing jobs rather than treatment ones.

Gillingham — Common Questions

The noise is upstairs but you are looking outside at ground level. Why?

On an inter-war semi the cavity connects the two. They get in low and come out high, so the defect is very often nowhere near the noise.

Will you seal the gaps as well as treat?

Yes, and on this housing stock that is the part that lasts. The quote separates the treatment from the proofing so you can see what you are paying for.

Do you cover Rainham and Twydall?

Yes, and Wigmore, Parkwood and the rest of the Medway towns.
