Pest Control Chatham

Dockyard terraces, a hill full of Victorian housing, and a town centre with flats above the shops.

Pest Control in Chatham

Chatham was built for the dockyard, and a great deal of the housing went up quickly in the nineteenth century to house the people who worked in it. Long terraces, small yards, shared roof runs and drainage that has been altered more than once.

That is a good building to live in and a generous one to be a rat or a mouse in, because a terrace of that age is rarely sealed at the places it matters.

Victorian terraces

The Roof Void Is Usually Not Yours Alone

The single most useful thing to know about a Chatham terrace is that the loft often runs the whole length of the row with nothing between the properties but a party wall that stops short of the tiles. Where it does, a squirrel or a rat that gets in at number four has the run of the whole terrace.

It explains a pattern we see constantly here: a household treats its loft, the noise stops for a fortnight, and then it comes back. Nothing failed. The animals simply moved along and came back.

Two other features of this stock matter. The yard and the rear alley - bins, decking, a shed on a slab - give rats cover right up against the back wall. And old drainage: clay pipework with perished joints, and in some rows an interceptor trap in the chamber that has lost its stopper, which is an open door from the sewer.

Flats above shops in the town centre are a separate case again, where the problem is usually the commercial waste at street level rather than anything the residents are doing.

Chatham — Common Questions

The noise stops and then comes back. Why?

On a terrace, very often because the loft is continuous above the party walls, so they move along the row rather than leaving. It needs looking at as a row rather than a house.

Can you treat a flat above a shop?

Yes. Where the source is the commercial waste downstairs we will say so in writing, which is what gets the landlord or the managing agent to act.

Do you cover Luton, Walderslade and Brompton?

Yes, and the rest of the Medway towns, with same-day appointments where we can.
