How To Tell It Is Fleas
Bites around the ankles and lower legs are the classic human sign, usually in small clusters. On a pet, persistent scratching, small dark flecks in the fur that turn reddish-brown when damp (flea dirt, which is digested blood), and visible fleas moving quickly through the coat are all typical. In the carpet itself, small dark specks near skirting boards and under furniture are often the first thing people notice once they start looking.
An empty property that has had fleas before can produce a sudden new wave when someone moves back in - the vibration of footsteps triggers pupae that have been dormant in the carpet for weeks or months, which is why a flat that has stood empty is sometimes worse than one that has been lived in throughout.

What The Treatment Involves
Preparation is mostly yours and it matters: vacuum thoroughly, including edges, under furniture and along skirting, empty the vacuum outside rather than into an indoor bin, and wash pet bedding on a hot wash. Floors then need to be clear so the whole area can be treated properly rather than around obstacles.
The treatment targets the carpet, upholstery and skirting rather than the pet - that side has to be handled by your vet, with the pet's own treatment up to date and actually applied, not just bought and left in a drawer. Doing one without the other is the most common reason a flea job does not hold.

Do I need to treat my pet as well?
Yes - the carpet treatment and the pet’s own flea treatment have to happen together. One without the other is the most common reason it does not hold.
