About Squirrels

Gray squirrels are approximately 18 inches in length, which includes their 9 inch tail and they weigh about 1-1.5 lbs. as an adult. Their coloration is usually a grayish colour, however they can have tan hairs in the fur as well and they usually have a white belly.

Their winter coat is grey above with a white underside and their summer coat is shorter, sleeker and more brownish grey Red squirrels have red/brown upper parts in summer but may show some grey on the back in winter, which can sometimes lead to some confusion.

Red squirrels are smaller, lighter, have ear tufts and prominent in the winter coat and brown on the legs and tail. Their natural habitats are wooded areas in tree cavities, and they can also be near hardwoods like oaks and hickory trees.

They will also construct feeding shelters out of leafs. They generally have 2 litters a year, 2-4 young per litter and they normally breed in midwinter and late spring. Gestation is about 44 days. Their diet consists of bird eggs, insects, berries, fruit, vegetables, nuts and nestling birds, squirrels also like to hoard their food.

The Gray squirrels are most active during the day, and can inhabit the attic areas as well as crawl spaces. They like to enter the attic areas from your gutters and nearby trees and bushes. Installing gutter guards, or down spouts with screen may prevent them from climbing up to the roof through a down spout.

Frequently Asked Questions – Squirrel Control in Kent

Q1. Why are squirrels considered a pest?
A1. Grey squirrels can cause significant damage by entering roof spaces, chewing through insulation, wiring, wooden beams, and pipes. They also create noise disturbances and pose a fire hazard through gnawed cables.

Q2. How do I know if I have squirrels in my loft or roof?
A2. Common signs include loud scratching or scurrying noises (especially at dawn and dusk), droppings, insulation damage, chewed entry points, and nesting material in lofts or eaves.

Q3. Are squirrels dangerous to humans or pets?
A3. While generally not aggressive, squirrels can bite if cornered and carry parasites such as fleas, ticks, and mites. Their gnawing can also create electrical and fire hazards.

Q4. Can I remove squirrels myself?
A4. DIY traps are often ineffective and using certain methods can be illegal without the correct licence. Professional pest control ensures humane, legal, and effective removal with long-term prevention.

Q5. What methods do you use to remove squirrels?
A5. We use approved live traps and proofing techniques to remove squirrels safely and legally. We also identify and seal entry points to prevent re-entry.

Q6. Is it illegal to release a trapped grey squirrel?
A6. Yes. Under UK law (Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981), it is illegal to release grey squirrels once captured. They must be humanely dispatched by a trained professional.

Q7. How did the squirrels get into my property?
A7. Squirrels can enter through roof gaps, broken soffits, vents, or loose tiles. We inspect the property and identify all access points for effective proofing.

Q8. Will removing one squirrel stop the problem?
A8. Not usually. Squirrels often live in small family groups. A full inspection and treatment plan ensures all animals are removed and access is prevented.

Q9. Do you offer squirrel control for gardens and trees?
A9. Our focus is on internal infestations (lofts, roofs, attics), but we can offer advice and deterrents for recurring issues in gardens or on properties with frequent squirrel damage.

Q10. How much does squirrel control cost in Kent?
A10. Costs vary depending on property size, access difficulty, and infestation severity. We offer fixed-fee treatments and free no-obligation quotes across Kent.
